Fern & Filament · Latrobe, PA

Filament that ships dry and prints consistent.

1.75 mm PLA and PETG spools — vacuum sealed the moment they’re wound, batch-matched by colour, and packed with a printed dry-time card so you know exactly how the spool was stored before it reached your build plate.

Twelve SKUs, each one a stack we actually print with in the shop. If a color ships, we’ve run a full spool through a printer first — no white-label surprises.

PLA Basic

Black and Forest Green — the two colours most of our regulars re-order. Black hides layer lines, Forest Green photographs like it should.

from $22.00 · 4 colours in range

PLA Silk

Pearl and Midnight — the pair we use in our own display prints. Same PLA base as Basic, different surface behavior under light.

from $28.00 · 3 colours in range

PETG Tough

Clear and Slate — the two we most often ship to people printing enclosures. Clear reads like glass, Slate matches most desk hardware.

from $31.00 · 5 colours in range

PLA Basic $22.00 · PLA Silk $28.00 · PETG Tough $31.00 per 1 kg spool. Flat $6.95 US shipping, free over $75, ships from Latrobe, PA.

How we pack a spool

Four steps between the extruder and your build plate.

We ship the same spool to a first-time hobbyist that we ship to a small print farm. The process below is why the box you open next week prints the way this week’s did.

  1. Step 1

    Extrude & measure

Every batch is measured at four points around each layer of the spool. If it drifts outside ±0.02 mm the run is set aside before it’s ever wound.

    ±0.02 mm
    diameter tolerance
  2. Step 2

    Wind to net 1 kg

Spools are wound to a net 1 kilogram of filament, not gross weight. What’s on the label is what you can extrude.

    1.00 kg
    net weight
  3. Step 3

    Vacuum seal, day of winding

Each spool goes into a heat-sealed foil pouch with fresh silica the same day it’s wound. No humidity between the reel and the bag.

    Day 0
    reel → seal
  4. Step 4

    Print the dry-time card

A card in the box records the seal date and a recommended dry-cycle for that specific material and colour — no guessing.

Who we’re for

Small print farms, classrooms, and desks that need spools that just work.

Hobbyists

The desk-in-the-basement printer

Everyday PLA Basic in colors you’d actually reach for, plus PLA Silk when a print is going on a shelf and needs to look the part.

Classrooms

Teachers running a room of Enders

Consistent diameter matters when a dozen students are all pushing print at once. Standing orders and school POs are fine — email us and we’ll set them up.

Small shops

Making parts, not just prototypes

PETG Tough is the reason most shops order from us — enclosures, fixtures, brackets, and parts that live outside on a hot day without turning to soup.

Our house rule: if a spool doesn’t print well on our own Prusa and Bambu machines in the workshop, it doesn’t go on the shelf. If it does, we tell you the temperatures we used and clip a printed dry-time card to every bag.

Ready to spool up

Twelve colors on the shelf, boxed the day you order.

Browse the full range, or drop us a line if you’re running a classroom, a makerspace, or a small production shop and want a standing order on flexible terms.
